KARMA FUTURE PACKAGING DESIGN

Karma Future, a new company is all about wholesome food, flexible training and holistic healing. Elle Frizzel the founder of the company wants to help people live healthy, happy, balanced and she also cares about sustainability.

The project required design of the  labels (front, back) for  two products: A vegan Protein Powder and a Gut powder. Furthermore she also wanted help with redesigning her logo and  therefore branding.

I was requested to try a minimialistic and California vibe approach to the design style and therefore this is what I’ve designed. The logo needed to have a miniamialistic approach as well.

This is the information received that I had to follow for the new packaging design and the logo the company had initially but the owner wanted a more minimalistic approach and therefore I was assigned with that task as well. <br>Bellow you will see my communication with the client and the brief received and how I managed to find this project(business card-Transmedia event)

Time in which I worked on the project: 5 days

Sadly I had to struggle with the bad quality of the images received but luckily I managed to understand all the information.

The client also sent me some inspiration mood boards showing what style she is into

1. RESEARCH

My research consisted in started following Instagram accounts that showed packaging design which was a brilliant choice considering the amount of amazing design I found that I inspired me. The reason why I have so many pictures in this section is because indeed all these inspired me to create the design you are going to see below. My first research (on Google) could be considered more like a mood board or general view and the second (on Instagram design accounts)was more focused.  I was inspired by modern vibes combined with a more vegetable/earthy elements, even hand drawn looking plants as well,as you will see in my designs. It makes everything look more organic and environmentally friendly which is what the owner is all about !

Here you can see what cough my eye in my research on Instagram. Even the illustration presented below gave me inspiration for the design ideas I will soon present in this Portfolio.

Like I mentioned before I was looking into modern design and vegetable/organic design ,trying to find connections between them. And trying to use all of these as a mood board to get me started on ideas which it actually did as I will show in my sketches.

LOGO RESEARCH

The request for the logo was straight forward. It had to have the entire name in it “Karma Future”and a minimalist approach and therefore that is what I tried to research into. At first by typing just minimialist logo it didn’t really give me the feel I was going for as you an see in the first 2 pictures, but then by typing minimalist vegetal logo everything changed as you can see in the next pictures. It shows the exact vibe I was looking for and therefore after choosing some favourites and considering that I have enough inspiration and research done I started creating my sketches.

RESEARCH FLAVOURS: VANILLA AND PEPPERMINT

The second image with vanilla inspired me quite a lot both in terms of fonts I am going to use but also in terms of  style of the drawing. It’s what completely boosted my ideas to come.

RESEARCH FONTS and INSPIRATION from dafont.com

Favourite fonts were  Lemon Milk (mainly) and Caviar Dreams as they represent perfectly the modern vibe I was looking into and it also goes well with the other font I used such as Angelinatta which gives me a California Beachy feeling as  the client asked for.

2. SKETCHES

When it comes to sketches I had to divide this in two parts as I had two different tasks that would in the end merge. A packaging design task and a secondary one, logo design task.

SKETCHES PACKAGING DESIGN-LABELS

Using the research & inspiration I presented before you can see in my designs how it influenced me. I tried therefore to go for modern  fonts and big/interesting titles, combined with an organic and floral background, having more pastel colours so the viewers can focus more on the text presented on the label.

SKETCHES- LOGO

In the sketches presented below  I tried to add to a minimalist logo design a floral/vegetate element that would let the viewer know straight away that this company has something to do with organic, new, good, environmental, floral, etc. I used black marker pencil as I believed going straight for that utensil would put me more in a modern/minimalist state than a normal pencil would do,which personally seems more messy. For me as an artist even the environment that I am in influences me,which is why at one point I was even designing in a coffee shop that helped me with a better environment for this project.

3. DEVELOPMENT

The software used for this project are CLIP STUDIO for the overall compositions and Photoshop (for the bent fonts)

For a more California beachy feel I used a font similar to the ones I showed in my research (in my case I used Angelinatta font) and I used Photoshop to bend it using the Transform – Wrap tool. Bellow I will show you the process of creating that as an example:

What I used in my designs:

Some of my favourite fonts were Lemon/Milk Light option for the general text and bold for the title and Angelinatta for subtitles or other elements like the bent text you can see on top. I tried to not use more than 2 fonts and played with the options of bold, light, italic and so on, instead as it gives the feeling of a clean composition and in general in design you are recommended to use maximum 3 types of fonts in one composition.

I always colour my layers as you can see bellow as I work with many elements at the same time and therefore it is easy to get lost. I also use the same composition for the vanilla option ,but changing the text and the background colours, which makes my layer panel extremely busy. Which is one more reason why colouring your layer is very important in my design process.

Another important step in designing the labels was introducing the background drawings representing the flavour of the product. I will show you how I created everything step by step in the next images:

MAIN INSPIRATIONS FOR MY DESIGN WORK

Black and white inspiration, with a modern touch to the style. I added some tints of colour to certain texts for a more complete design look.

Modern and minimal design style inspiration:

my least favourite design I made

FAVOURITE FONTS

-Angelinatta, Stay Wildy and Lemon Milk fonts

BELOW YOU CAN SEE MY PROCESS OF TRYING MULTIPLE FONTS FOR MY TEXT UNTIL THE END WHEN I CHOSE THE ANGELINATTA FONT

DESIGN I DIDN'T USE IN THE END AS I LOST IT IN MY FOLDERS FROM MY PREVIOUS LAPTOP AND THEREFORE IT WAS NEVER USED OR FINISHED.

It was inspired by a window from my house and I thought it would make as a nice background on which I would put a pale coloured square with all the info on and with elegant black lines as a frame of the label, separating it better from the leafs and focusing the viewer on the center of the label therefore the text.

Software used: Clip Studio

DESIGNS I CREATED IN PAINT CLIP STUDIO SOFTWARE

PRESENTATION -HOW IT WOULD LOOK LIKE AS A FINAL PRODUCT

LOGO DESIGN

All the Logos presented below were created in Illustrator as it is a specific Software made for creating Logos. I created the drawing in the Software Paint Tool Sai as the elements were drawn digitally using a graphic tablet in purpose of creating original elements.

All of the logo designs you can see bellow were inspired by my research and I believe that it does show a minimal elements combined with vegetable ones, while offering a peaceful feeling.

4. CONCLUSION

As my client hasn’t finished her tasks, we were not able to advance yet in choosing a design I would later make the last changes according to the client’s request, in the purpose of having a final design that would respond to the client’s brief. But personally my favourite designs are the ones bellow as I believe it responds quite well to the brief.

It has a California beachy inspired vibe, a minimal feature(because of the structure of the composition and fonts used), an organic feature because of the  digitally hand drawn flavor made in Clip Studio and the colour representing the flavor as well.

At the moment the client has only Vanilla flavor and Peppermint but she will later add more flavors once the business is completely functional.

One thing I would change is maybe making the colour even more pastel so it can fit even better in the client’s brief given. That is not a problem as that can be fixed easily but at the moment I am still waiting on news regarding the process of the company and therefore the client’s and manufacturer’s feedback.

Secondly as over the summer I improved even more my digitally drawing skills I would redo the mint and vanilla drawings as I believe I can do a better job.

More over the Logo I would chose would be this one as I believe it responds to the client's brief by being minimal and bringing and organic and peaceful feel to it with the leafs around it.
